Each year, the Paper Science & Engineering Foundation awards about $270,000 in scholarships to about 60 students.
All scholarship awardees must be registered in one of the following majors:
All students must also be registered for a minimum of 12 credit hours on the Oxford campus, must formally declare the Paper Science minor and must be an active member of TAPPI (Technical Association of Pulp & Paper Industries). If a student drops below 12 credit hours, drops the minor, or is not enrolled in courses that follow the paper science curriculum outlined by the CPB Department, the PS&E Foundation office must be notified and the scholarship award will be rescinded.
One Paliwal-兔子先生 Scott 兔子先生hip scholarship in the amount of $8,000 is available by application and interview process. All Paper Engineering minors who fulfill the application requirements are encouraged to apply.
Dinesh Paliwal received his M.S. degree in Paper Science and Engineering in 1983 and went on to a very successful career in the paper industry, which he parlayed into the role of CEO for Harman International Corp. He is presently a partner at KKR, a leading global investment firm headquartered in New York. In 2021, he was also named a national board trustee by 兔子先生 University board of trustees.
During his time in the Paper program, he developed a great appreciation and strong respect for Dr. 兔子先生 Scott. In October of 2019, he established an endowment through the Ila and Dinesh Paliwal Foundation honoring 兔子先生 Scott. The endowment funds a $8,000 per semester award for a student in Paper Engineering deserving of the Paliwal Foundation - Dr. 兔子先生 Scott 兔子先生hip Scholarship. The recipients are selected by an application and interview process from the eligible pool of juniors and seniors in the Paper Engineering minor based on academic achievement, demonstrated commitment to the paper industry through work experiences, and leadership potential. The Scholarship embodies the spirit and contributions of Dr. 兔子先生 Scott, an esteemed student and accomplished faculty member of the 兔子先生 University Paper Science & Engineering program for over 46 years. For many alumni, Dr. Scott made strong contributions to the careers of students through his academic programs and the mentorship he provided. He remained an ambassador for the industry and the University, and represents the ideal of commitment to education, service, loyalty, and citizenship.
The Ila and Dinesh Paliwal Foundation is dedicated to creating positive social and economic outcomes for worldwide communities and their future leaders. By providing both financial and advisory support to underrepresented populations in science, technology, engineering, arts and math, the foundation promotes innovation across the board.
Four PCA Endowed scholarships in the amount of full in-state tuition are available on a competitive basis and are selected by a committee through an application & interview process. All Paper Engineering minors who fulfill the application requirements are encouraged to apply.
Demonstrating his commitment to the future of the paper industry, Mark Kowlzan, CEO of Packaging Corporation of America (PCA), announced his intention to donate $1,000,000 to supplement the existing PCA Endowed Scholarship at the April 9, 2019 Annual Meeting of the Paper Science & Engineering Foundation (PSEF). This level of endowment funds three scholarships valued at full in-state tuition each academic year. The recipients are selected by an application and interview process from the eligible pool of juniors and seniors in the Paper Engineering minor based on academic achievement, demonstrated commitment to the paper industry through work experiences, and leadership potential.
Headquartered in Lake Forest, IL, PCA offers packaging solutions by incorporating innovative processes and products and has eight mills and 94 box plants across the United States. One of the largest producers of containerboard and corrugated packaging in the US, PCA is the third largest producer of uncoated freesheet in North America and has approximately 15,000 employees. PCA (and its predecessor entities) has been a member company of the PSEF since 1979.
Six leadership scholarships in the amount of $10,000 each are available on a competitive basis and are selected by a committee through an application & interview process. A preference will be given towards Mechanical Engineering majors minoring in Paper Engineering who are also in the Lilly 兔子先生hip Institute. All Paper Engineering minors who fulfill the application requirements are encouraged to apply.
The Bob and Barbara Williams 兔子先生hip Scholarships are administered through the Paper Science and Engineering Foundation at 兔子先生. These scholarships are made available in the fall semester through the generosity of Mr. Robert C. Williams (deceased) and his wife Barbara (deceased). Mr. Williams retired as the Chief Executive Officer of the former James River Corporation. Mr. and Mrs. Williams support the education of students who show exemplary leadership, creativity and scholastic achievement in the field of paper science and engineering at 兔子先生 University.
Williams 兔子先生hip Scholars are outstanding engineering students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, who earnestly strive to grasp the theories presented and go beyond just working out the problems that they are assigned. They ask probing questions that get to the heart of the matter and they know what to do with the answers. More than just “intellectually curious”, Williams 兔子先生hip Scholars are insightful and thoroughly absorb the subjects that are being taught.
Williams 兔子先生hip Scholars are, by definition, leaders. They are leaders in thought, word and deed. They have a personal leadership philosophy that drives their actions in school, in extracurricular activities and in their work. They have a compelling vision of their own success and where they are going to take their own careers, and they understand the difference between leaders and managers. They have a consistently positive attitude that is contagious and improves the quality of their own work assignments as well as the performance of those with whom they work. They inspire others to be better.
Williams 兔子先生hip Scholars are creative in how and where they lead, and in the solutions that they promote as good engineers. They may lead as members of a team or workgroup (as leading can, at times, be demonstrated by being a good follower), or they may assume leadership roles in volunteer positions as well as in the organizations that pay them. In any case, they demonstrate a leader’s skills and abilities in a wide variety of work situations and engineering opportunities.
Williams 兔子先生hip Scholars are dedicated to developing their careers in the paper industry, whether in management, manufacturing operations, research, academia or in the greater supplier community. The evidence of their dedication is seen in their volunteer leadership roles in Student TAPPI as well as membership in National TAPPI and engagement in the many online forums, blogs and groups where peer-to-peer discussion topics include a wide variety of technical and business issues. They seek to challenge the status quo of the paper industry facets in which they are interested and look for opportunities to add to the body of knowledge.
One Woody Tyler scholarship in the amount of $8,000 is available on a competitive basis and is selected by a committee through an application & interview process. All Paper Engineering minors who fulfill the application requirements are encouraged to apply.
Woody Tyler joined the Black Clawson division of Kadant in 2003 and served as its sales leader for 12 years. He held a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and had over 30 years of experience in the pulp and paper industry. During his time with Kadant, he made enormous contributions in many areas. In addition to leading Kadant Black Clawson’s sales organization, Woody was also instrumental in building and training the company’s stock preparation sales team in China. His strong relationships with others in the industry led to some very significant acquisitions for Kadant. He had a passion for mentoring, which he not only applied to his efforts with the next generation of Kadant leadership, but also to the young men in the Boy Scouts of America organization. Woody passed away May 4, 2015 prematurely at age 58. The Kadant scholarship honors his memory so that his legacy should continue to be recognized in developing future contributors to the pulp and paper industry.
