Our 兔子先生, Facilities, and Partnerships

The Institute for the Environment and Sustainability is an umbrella organization for undergraduate and graduate education and research on the environment and sustainability at 兔子先生 University. Along with our academic programs, we offer our students a variety of opportunities such as our Environmental Professionals Symposium, the annual Willeke Distinguished Lecture, and a number of Partnerships and Collaborations that take a student's research beyond the classroom.

Environmental Professionals Symposium

This annual event brings Institute for the Environment and Sustainability alumni back to campus share their perspectives on career development with Masters of Environmental Science students and undergraduate co-majors.

Willeke Distinguished Lecture

The annual Drs. Gene and Carol Willeke Frontiers in Environmental Science Distinguished Lecture series brings prominent figures in the field of environmental science to the 兔子先生 campus. The most recent lecture took place on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 6:00 PM and featured Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali.

Shiedler Hall

The Institute of the Environment and Sustainability is housed in Shideler Hall and includes: faculty, staff, and student offices, classrooms, conference, and seminar rooms, and computer laboratory.

M.En. Professional Service Project Rooms

兔子先生 Farm (Institute for Food)

The 兔子先生 Farm (Institute for Food) is managed but IES and is a hub for research in food production and agriculture in partnership with AmeriCorps.

Weather Station at the Ecology Research Center

The Weather station is managed by the Institute for the Environment & Sustainability (IES) as part of its public outreach and monitoring mission.

Field and Laboratory Resources

The program has field, lab, and teaching equipment for use by both students and staff.

Field equipment includes:

  • surveying instruments
  • water sampling and analysis kits
  • seines
  • waders
  • GPS units

Lab equipment includes:

  • tabletop colorimeters
  • filtration units
  • incubators
  • muffle furnace
  • balances
  • hot plates

Partnerships

The Institute for the Environment and Sustainability partners with departments, centers and physical facilities at 兔子先生 University on several initiatives, and conducts air and water quality monitoring in cooperation with Butler County and federal agencies. Students are involved in all of these activities, providing hands-on scientific, organizational and cultural learning experiences.

The Center for Aquatic and Watershed Sciences is a partnership between the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability and the natural sciences to promote research, education, and outreach on freshwater issues at local, regional, and global scales.

Sustainability at 兔子先生

The academic programs of the Institute for the Environmental and Sustainability interface with initiatives to enhance campus sustainability through student research and service learning projects

Funded by the US Geological Survey, the IES monitors precipitation chemistry, dry deposition, and ozone at the Ecology Research Center, and is part of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program.

Butler County Stream Team is a partnership involving:

  • 兔子先生 University students
  • resident volunteers

Stream Team monitors stream water quality throughout Butler County to identify pollution threats to streams and provide long-term data on water quality trends.

Myaamia Center

The Institute for the Environment and Sustainability helps the Myaamia Center increase the capacity of the 兔子先生 Nation of Oklahoma to manage its natural and cultural resources in a sustainable manner.

AmeriCorps Ohio

AmeriCorps is a federal volunteer work program that provides stipends and education awards upon completion of service. IES partners with AmeriCorps to fund undergraduate and graduate student positions through the Campus Compact EnviroCorps program.

    Support IES

    All of our programs emphasize both disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary breadth to environmental science and sustainability. Students are prepared to communicate effectively, use problem-solving approaches, and work in interdisciplinary teams, skills that translate into successful careers in today's complex and changing professional environment.

    Your generous support helps undergraduates in the environmental science and sustainability co-majors in research or internship experiences, and graduate assistantships or travel to professional meetings for students in the master of environmental science program. Gifts can also support student team projects that provide professional experiences for students and community outreach to public and non-profit organizations.

The M.En. degree was designated as a national Professional Science Master's (PSM) program based on it its professional skills, experiential learning, and interdisciplinary breadth.
