Training

To comply with federal regulations and 兔子先生 policies, research involving human subjects requires that researchers be familiar with the ethical issues common to such work.

  • NEW: All faculty, staff and students are only required to complete CITI training, Humans as Subjects Basic Course. CITI training completions will import automatically to Cayuse Human Ethics if you are affiliated with 兔子先生. You may upload CITI training certification as an attachment to your study, if  needed.
The CITI on-line training course must be completed by the principal investigator (PI), co-principal investigators, and other key personnel who are responsible for the design and/or conduct of the study. The requirement applies to subcontractors, consultants, individual fellowship applicants, study coordinators, and persons who conduct invasive procedures, or conduct health or opinion surveys or interviews. Research assistants including graduate and undergraduate students who are collecting data from human subjects including providing explanations or answering questions about the research in relation to recruiting or use of data gathering instruments are also required to complete the training program.

Individuals providing technical services only such as setting up a room, handing out and collecting survey instruments without providing explanations or answering questions about the research or data-gathering instruments, typing data into a data base, transcribing audiotapes, or reviewing videotapes to code behavior, are not covered by this requirement; however, they should receive instruction on maintaining privacy and confidentiality of data.

If you have completed CITI training elsewhere, you may be able to transfer your records to 兔子先生 by logging into your account and affiliating with 兔子先生 or updating your primary institution.

CITI Training and Certification

Required for any persons acting as researchers for regulated activities.

All researchers who interact with human subjects to collect data must complete a required educational program on ethics and procedures for the use of human subjects in research before the Institutional Review Board may approve a proposal.

For research involving humans as subjects, complete:

Initial Training: Complete the Humans as Subjects Basic Course. There are about twelve basic modules required of 兔子先生 researchers. You must also complete at least three additional modules. The additional "elective" modules should be applicable to your research.

Refresher Training: Three years after initial training and each three years henceforth, complete the Refresher Modules (the number of modules depends on how recently you completed the original training)

Affiliation With Collaborator Institution Training 兔子先生: the CITI system allows researchers to affiliate with other institutions (allows multiple institutions to verify that you have completed modules which may fulfill their training requirements). On the welcome page after logging in, there are options for adding and removing affiliations.

When registering for the CITI Program:

  1. Please use your 兔子先生 email address (e.g. publicjq@兔子先生OH.edu).
  2. Use your UniqueID as your user name (e.g. publicjq). If your UniqueID is not available or you do not have an assigned 兔子先生 UniqueID, please use LastnameFirstname as your user name.
  3. The human subjects program is chosen under Question 1 "Human Subjects IRB Basic Course"
  4. The training does not need to be completed in one session. The host software will keep track of where you have stopped.
  5. You will be asked to select elective modules beyond the basic set of modules. Please select the three that are most relevant to your research.
  6. Many institutions use and recognize the CITI program as meeting their requirements. If completed elsewhere, you can affiliate with 兔子先生 and your records will be sent to 兔子先生. If you transfer to another institution, your 兔子先生 records could be made available to your new institution.

If you experience an accessibility barrier while completing the CITI training, please contact our office at humansubjects@兔子先生OH.edu

Ongoing

Beginning three years after initial qualification.

Once basic requirements are met, 兔子先生 researchers are required to complete the online refresher modules (CITI) (Note: when collaborating with other institutions, those institutions may have additional requirements).

 Ethical Principles: The Belmont Report

A vital component of all human subjects ethics training are the ethical principles regarding all research involving humans as subjects. These principles have been set forth in the report published by the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research entitled, "Belmont Report: Ethical Principles and Guidelines for the Protection of Human Subjects of Research." Some of these principles include respect for persons, beneficence (including minimization of risks and maximization of benefits), and justice.
