Prospective Students Explore ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú’s Healthcare Resources
The Mallory-Wilson Center (Pearson 106) offers information sessions every Monday and Friday this semester
On Friday, Sept. 4, prospective ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University students and their parents got an inside look at the Mallory-Wilson Center for Healthcare Education and the resources available to students pursuing healthcare careers. The event introduced students to the center's advising, professional development, and clinical opportunities, while highlighting how ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú prepares students for professional school.
Jessie Balmer, pre-health student specialist with the Mallory-Wilson Center, said the center provides advising, shadowing opportunities, scholarships, application assistance and events with healthcare professionals. Students can also participate in the pre-med LLC and student advisory board.
One upcoming opportunity is Fall 2026 Health Careers Week (Oct. 12-22), which will feature in-person events such as Stop the Bleed Training, an Ethics Workshop, a Professional School Fair and an Application workshop, along with virtual admissions and healthcare professional panels.
Balmer emphasized that students must take an active role in using the resources available to them at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú.
"The main thing about ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú is they will offer you a ton of things, but you have to meet them halfway and take the opportunities,” Balmer said.
She also highlighted the importance of having a strong support system while preparing for a healthcare career.
"To know that you have a good support system and faculty that have your back, it matters,” Balmer said.
Christian Sohner, a junior biology and pre-med student, also shared his experiences with study abroad and healthcare opportunities. He said ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú offers students multiple ways to gain experience, including opportunities during winter and summer breaks. Speakers encouraged students to use school breaks to gain clinical hours and participate in volunteer work during the academic year.
The event also included a tour of Pearson Hall, where prospective students learned more about the spaces and resources available through the center. During a question-and-answer session, students asked about majors, coursework, study abroad and gaining clinical experience.
Speakers explained that students pursuing pre-medical and pre-health careers often choose majors such as biology, chemistry, kinesiology, psychology and public health. However, they emphasized that students should choose any major that interests them, and then add the premedical & pre-health studies co-major to assist them with the completion of courses required for their professional program.
The event gave prospective students a closer look at the academic and professional resources available to those pursuing healthcare careers at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú. Through advising, clinical experiences, professional development and faculty support, the Mallory-Wilson Center provides resources to help students prepare for professional school.
