Model Arab League wins several awards at the Ohio Valley conference
Over a dozen students represented ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University in Bloomington, Indiana.
ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University’s Model Arab League team sent fourteen students to Bloomington, Indiana, February 19-21 to participate in the Ohio Valley Model Arab League conference, earning several awards.
The students formed delegations from two countries, Libya and Algeria, and senior Sydney Kerlin ’26 (International Studies and Political Science) served as the Secretary General. All students performed with professionalism and faithfully represented the policies of their countries.
The team earned six individual awards. The awardees were:
Joriana Gibbens-Egolf ’28 (International Studies, Spanish, and Organizational ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉúhip) and Jade Schram ’28 (International Studies and Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies): Distinguished Delegation in the Political Affairs council.
Eliza Sullivan ’28 (Diplomacy and Global Politics, Russian, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies, and Data Analytics) and Austin Fisher ’28 (Political Science and History): Outstanding Delegation in the Political Affairs council.
Alice Ross ’28 (International Studies, East Asian Languages and Cultures, and Data Analytics) and Megan Conley ’26 (Linguistics): Outstanding Delegation in the Environmental Affairs council.
Grace Farrell ’28 (History and International Studies) and Aicha Diaw ’29 (International Studies): Distinguished Delegation in the Environmental Affairs council.
Majesta Johsnon ’28 (International Studies): Outstanding Delegation in the Joint Defense council.
Lyla Nieter ’28 (International Studies and Economics) and Priya GT ’26 (International Studies): Distinguished Delegation in the Palestinian Affairs council.
The team earned overall awards as well. The delegation of Libya was named an Overall Distinguished Delegation, and the delegation of Algeria was named an Overall Outstanding Delegation.
"I am proud of the team's growth,” said Shawn Vanness, team advisor and associate director of strategic communications and marketing in the Scripps Gerontology Center.
“They spent a semester researching and discussing strategy, which brought them success at regionals. The team is ready to bring that same professional excellence to nationals over spring break!"

The National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations’ started the Model Arab League (MAL) program in 1983 and focuses on the 22 member states that comprise the League of Arab States which was established in February 1945.
