CEC graduate students to present award-winning research at upcoming IEEE conferences

ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) graduate students Fatama Tuz (Asha) Zahura and Farzana Alam will present their research at major IEEE conferences this fall.

Zahura will present her paper, “Feedforward Control of LLC Converter: Time Domain State Trajectory-Based Analytical Formulation,” at the IEEE Energy Conversion Conference and Expo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Oct. 19–23. She has been selected to receive the Women in Engineering Travel Grant Award.

Alam will present her paper, “Optimized PCB Design for Low Commutation Loop Inductance and Compact Heatsinking for GaN-Based Converters,” at the 12th Annual IEEE Workshop on Wide Bandgap Power Devices and Applications (WiPDA 2025) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Nov. 10–12. She will also receive a WIPDA Women in Engineering Travel Grant Award in support of her participation.

First students to earn Supply Chain Management Consulting badge announced

The first group of students to earn the new Supply Chain Management Consulting badge have been announced.

Last year, to help students differentiate themselves, the Department of Management created the badge, which can be viewed on a student's Linkedin profile. Students do not need to intend to enter the field of consulting to earn the badge. It is designed to help teach skills that are applicable to any career.

The first students to earn the badge are:

To earn the badge this academic year, students must:

Thacker exhibits artwork at pair of Cincinnati shows

Charlie Thacker, instructor at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University's Art Center, exhibited artwork in two shows over the summer in Cincinnati. The first was at a new artist-run space in Camp Washington and the second at Reading Community Art Center Hall of Grace, both in June.

In September, Thacker will show a 3D printed sculpture during a show called “Trial and Error” held at Northern Kentucky University. Thacker's teaching areas include 3D printing, laser cutting, and digital design.

Martin-Malikian contributes chapter to new book

Liz Martin-Malikian, chair and professor of Architecture and Interior Design, recently contributed a chapter to the book “Twenty Award-Winning Architectural Design Studio Methodologies Teaching Carbon Neutral Design in North America.” Martin-Malikian’s chapter explores decarbonizing curriculum through environmental stewardship and experiential learning. Martin-Malikian also was interviewed recently by for an article discussing pedagogical ethos, past nonprofit work, and more.

Fenton serves as co-curator of international art exhibition

Jordan Fenton, associate professor of Art History, is co-curator of an international traveling Exhibition. “New African Masquerades: Artistic Innovations and Collaborations” will open on Oct. 9 at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville. A 250-plus page book that shares the same title also accompanies the exhibition.

ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Ph.D. student, associate professor published in chemistry journal

ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University’s Zachary Mentzer, Ph.D. student in Engineering, and Mehdi Zanjani, associate professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, were recently published in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B by the American Chemical Society.

Mentzer co-authored the paper, with Zanjani and Yoonjee Park of the University of Cincinnati. This paper investigates how the geometric structure of pore networks within membranes, along with the steric effects of antibody structure, influence the release kinetics of drug delivery systems.

Trio of economics professors notified of research grant

Farmer School of Business professors , , and  have been notified of funding of their project "Collaborative Research: Introductory Course Material to Increase Participation in College Majors: A Randomized Curriculum Intervention in Economics" from the National Science Foundation’s program. The project aims to reshape introductory economics courses by emphasizing social context and relating economics to students' lives. Furthermore, the project intends to examine how exposure to relatable content affects students' perceptions of economics and future academic and career choices, paying close attention to heterogeneous effects across population subgroups. The work is in partnership with Bruce Weinberg and Aiday Sikhova.

Ridilla serves as judge for international competition

Andrea Ridilla, professor of Oboe, recently served as a final round judge for the Fernand Gillet-Hugo Fox International Competition for Oboe held at Butler University in Indianapolis. Ridilla was one of five final round judges for the annual competition, which is sponsored by the International Double Reed Society.

Paper by 3 FSB students, professor named best student paper at MWAIS conference

A research paper that grew out of a class project was named the best student paper at the recent Midwest Association of Information Systems (MWAIS) conference.

The paper, "IT Governance Framework for the Internet of Medical Things in the Healthcare Industry," by , , , and mentor Dr. Jeffrey Merhout, "analyzes the risks of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) systems and develops an IT governance framework corresponding to these risks."

The paper was the result of a class project in a spring 2024 ISA 305 class, the second year in a row that a student or team took their project and converted it into a conference publication.

Sumerauer graduated in 2025 with a degree in supply chain management and operations, while Sundquist and Roemer earned cybersecurity management degrees in 2025.

Paper co-authored by trio of ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉúans recognized by WSSA

A paper co-authored by Marco Donoso ‘MS 22, David Gorchov, professor of Biology, and Hanna Leonard ‘22, was recognized by the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) as the 2024 Outstanding Paper - Invasive Plant Science and Management”  It was featured on the WSSA website April 1:   The original paper, ” was published in Invasive Plant Science and Management January 2024. Their research showed that if left unchecked, both overabundant white-tailed deer populations and invasive shrubs like Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) can devastate deciduous native tree regeneration. Yet, a management strategy focused only on deer, or only on invasive shrubs, results in little or no forest health improvement.

Kernodle earns two recent honors

In March, the Society for American Music honored Tammy Kernodle, University Distinguished Professor of Music, with the Distinguished Service Award in recognition for 30 years of service to the organization, the discipline of musicology, and American music.

In April, Kernodle also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Music at Ohio State.

James Flynn co-authors paper on Lousiana's public health efforts against Hepatitus C

Hepatitis C is a major public health concern due to its high rates of infection and mortality. Recent breakthroughs in pharmaceuticals not only have the potential to cure hepatitis C but could also cause large positive health externalities through reduced transmission. The high cost of these drugs under traditional reimbursement schemes create large obstacles to care, but a recent first-of-its-kind two-part tariff system in Louisiana aims to circumvent these obstacles using a modified subscription model with an exclusive pharmaceutical provider. that the program more than pays for itself.

Paluch publishes work in Journal of Molecular Liquids

Andrew Paluch, associate professor in the Department of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering, has just published in the Journal of Molecular Liquids: “.” The publication is the result of the MS thesis work of Lucas Kwiyukwa at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) which he co-supervised. In this work, Paluch and his co-authors use molecular simulation to investigate the solvation structure/mechanism and relative solubility of amygdalin, a cyanogenic glycoside with anticancer and pain-relief properties, in a range of pure solvents. The manuscript is published open access, and is free to all. This research was made possible with computational support from the Ohio Supercomputer Center which graciously provided computational resources. The OnDemand platform has allowed students in Tanzania to access and use HPC resources via a web browser.

Bhunia coauthors paper in IET Information Security

Assistant professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering Suman Bhunia, along with coauthors Matthew Blackert, Andrew DePero, Henry Deal, and Amar Nath Patra, has published a paper in IET Information Security. IET Information Security is a bimonthly peer-reviewed scientific journal covering information security and cryptography. The paper, , was written in collaboration with the students in Bhunia’s Ethical Hacking class.

CEC faculty members to present at conference

College of Engineering and Computing faculty members Suman Bhunia, Garrett Goodman, and Peter Jamieson's work on Large Language Model (LLM) based Generative AI tools for Computer Science education will be presented at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) 2025 conference.

Their paper, “Benchmarking of LLM-Based Generative AI for CSE Undergraduate Curriculum,” evaluates how LLM-based Generative AI tools perform on assessments from core computer science courses, identifying their strengths and limitations. Their findings provide insights into integrating AI into the curriculum to better prepare students for AI-augmented careers.

Cole recognized for commitment to teaching

Britt Cole, associate professor of Nursing, was recognized at the Greater Cincinnati Collegiate Connection (GC3) Annual Celebration of Teaching for her commitment to teaching and student success. As co-director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, she collaborates with the Regionals Dean's office to advance retention efforts and supports teaching excellence across ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú's campuses. Hall, Lee serve as featured presenters

, professor, and , assistant professor of Criminal Justice, were the featured presenters at a week-long comparative criminal justice program during the winter term of the in Delhi, India. Their sessions touched on policing and corrections systems, judges and the courts, due process, and criminal trials. Also included in their visit was a meeting with the National Human Rights Commission of India, and the opportunity to share ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú gear with course participants.

Ganiva Reyes, associate professor in the Department of Teaching, Curriculum, and Educational Inquiry, was elected to serve as chair of the Critical Issues in Curriculum and Cultural Studies SIG of the American Educational Research Association for a two-year term. Reyes also was selected to serve as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Educational Studies journal of the American Educational Studies Association, also a two-year appointment.

The remaining awarded amount of $68,805 is designated for the evaluation portion of the project.

Honglu Jiang, assistant professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering; James Walden, professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering; Marianne Murphy, professor of Computer and Information Technology; and Joseph Nwankpa, associate professor of Information Systems and Analytics, received $199,850 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for their project titled “Multidisciplinary Pathways to Cybersecurity Professionals.” Theirs is one of 15 cooperative agreements at education and community organizations in 11 states totaling nearly $3 million aimed at developing the workforce needed to defend the nation’s organizations and infrastructure from cybersecurity risks.

Baessler represents ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú at Great Lakes procurement conference

Laura Baessler, assistant director of strategic procurement, represented ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University at the Great Lakes National Association of Educational Procurement Meeting, where she serves as president of the NAEP Great Lakes Region (covering Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin). This three-day conference, held from Sept. 25-27 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Mason, Ohio, focused on advancing institutional and individual success through innovative procurement strategies. The event featured learning sessions, a supplier showcase, and networking opportunities for members. A total of 82 members and 77 suppliers attended the conference.

Teale published in meteorology journal

Natalie Teale, assistant professor of Geography, is co-author of a study "," published in. the Sept 2024 issue of Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology. Their research shows that the majority of damaging flood reports in the Northeastern United States in recent decades were associated with conditions that were not considered “extreme” by most definitions.

Wang receives grant from NIBIB

Hui Wang, associate professor of Chemical, Paper, and Biomedical Engineering, has recently been awarded a new grant of approximately $200,000 from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This grant will support Wang and his team in developing a reliable optical imaging phantom for optical imaging applications. During his tenure at ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú University, Wang has secured $1.5 million in research grants from NIH and the Department of Defense (DOD) as a principal investigator. He has also contributed as a co-investigator to an additional $2.3 million in research funding.

Hamlin, League of Women Voters partner with Broadway musical

Kimberly Hamlin, Chamberlin Family Professor and chair of History, and a member of the board of directors of the League of Women Voters of the United States, was one of several LWV directors , the day commemorating the adoption of the nineteenth amendment to the United States Constitution in 1920, which gave some women the right to vote. This special “League Night” also included a panel discussion featuring the League’s incoming CEO, historian Kimberly Hamlin, journalist Erin Geiger Smith, and Suffs cast members Kirsten Scott and Dana Costello that focused on how women have shaped democracy since the suffrage movement and what’s at stake in the 2024 election.

Richard Moore, associate professor of Biology, received $19,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for a project entitled "Untangling the Taxonomic Relationships Between Two Petitioned Pitcher Plants in the Sarracenia Rubra Species Complex, Sarracenia Rubra ssp. Gulfensis and Sarracenia Rubra ssp. wherryi." Those selected are the result of a nomination and competitive selection process. The Distinguished Educator Award recognizes Cortland alumni for "rendering outstanding services to the educational field” and “for their success as teachers and mentors.”

won six out of the 1o journalism awards offered to collegiate newspapers at the this summer. The ÍÃ×ÓÏÈÉú Student placed second in the Best College Newspaper category. The Student’s sports section took first and second place in the Best College Sports Writing category, with winning pieces from Jack Schmelzinger and Kethan Babu. Austin Smith placed first in Best College News Writing with his environmental focus on reporting through The Student’s GreenHawks section, Meredith Perkins ranked first for Best College Opinion Writing, and Reagan Rude took second place in Best College Feature Writing.

An awards ceremony was held for the competition on Aug. 24 in Cleveland.
