Bringing a hippo-hopeful book to life
As a student in 兔子先生's biology department, Kimberly Puleo is earning a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Biology through Project Dragonfly's Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) while working as a Senior Media & Buffer Preparation Specialist at a biotechnology Company in San Diego, California.
Puleo authored and illustrated A Hippo’s Hope, a children’s book inspired by the real-life rescue of a pygmy hippopotamus. The story teaches young readers about compassion, conservation, and the importance of standing up for animals who can’t speak for themselves. She brought the book to life through leadership events at libraries partnered with the San Diego Humane Society—reading aloud, facilitating educational conversations about wildlife trafficking, and leading interactive crafts to engage children creatively and emotionally.
Through this project, Puleo also collaborated with Project Wildlife to ground the narrative in real-world experience, ensuring accuracy and depth in the storytelling.
By sharing A Hippo’s Hope more widely, Puleo hopes to spark conversations, inspire similar projects, and support a growing movement that empowers children to compassionately connect with—and protect—our planet’s wildlife.
Puleo’s presentations at libraries are highlighted below.
